Moving Forward in Oakland After the Mehserle Verdict

In July of 2010 a white BART officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 killing of a young black man. Many people in Oakland deemed the verdict too lenient and protested the court’s decision.

The Oscar Grant case seems to be tapping into deep anger and pain in Oakland regarding high rates of unemployment, violence, poor schools and tension between law enforcement and citizens.

We will discuss how Oakland can move on from the Oscar Grant case by addressing challenges facing the city’s youth and starting to repair the relationship between the Oakland Police Department and the community.
