On June 3, Californians will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 98, which some say will reform eminent domain legislation and protect the rights of property owners. Others say Proposition 98 is deceptive and would eliminate long-standing renter protections such as rent control.

Pests & Pesticides: What Are the Issues With Both & How Should They Be Handled?

Pesticides aren’t something normally given much thought by city dwellers, except maybe when selecting produce. But they’ve become big news in the Bay Area as plans to eradicate the little known light brown apple moth have come under scrutiny. The aerial spraying scheduled for the Bay Area in August came to a halt after a court ruling in Santa Cruz, and a subsequent order by the Governor, called for more analysis of the pesticide’s potential impact on the environment.

California’s 88,000 farms and ranches as well as an abundant agricultural sector make this a particularly important debate in our state. While pesticide industry representatives point out the vital role these agents play in our food-growing process, those against pesticide use, however, raise many concerns and cite evidence connecting serious health issues to pesticide exposure.

When might pesticides be necessary? Are they more or less detrimental than we realize? What are the alternatives?
